My FAS review...
Why I choose the VFC AKS 74 (With side Mount)
I wanted an AEG with long range capabilities, it had to be sturdy, able to hold a drum mag (I hate changing mags), large battery, and usefull in jungle and CQB senarios . This was a tough wish and an oxy moron having a short AEG with long range...
Being a collecter of quality AEG's I have had my eye on VFC's quality and relalistic products but the previous release of the AKS74UN was too short for what I wanted. However, when the AKS 74 came out it met the criteria and out of the box has very impressive qualities.
FPS: 310 stock
Battery: Up to a 12v 1400mAh Intellect stick battey
Inner Barrel: 502mm
Gear Box: 7mm bearing Ver 3
Motor: EG1300 High speed
Reciever: All Steel
Stock: Real Plywood
Details: All the correct rivets and Stampings
Other: Soviet Style side Mount
Cons
The problem with this AEG for some is obviously the price. Listed on HK web sites at HK$3800 it may be way out of reach for most. I was lucky enought to get mine for the walkin price at Armed Forces (WGC Shop) for $3000. Cheaper than CA's version but still a hefty price.
The problem with this AEG was finding the right mags to fit. It apears that the VFC model has a tighter mag well than TM or CA. At Armed Forces they were very kind and patient trying to find the right Drum mag. We tried Hero Arms, Star, and some I've never heard of. There was either feed problems of it just didn't fit.
The problem was solved eventually after talking with the gurus at Guns & Guys. They offered me the "Start-2" AK drum but stated it may take a little filing on the back nub of the magazine. Fortunatly I when I tried to fit it in the comfort of my home it fit with a little coaxing. Very snug and works great! This Drum has an electric wind and holds 3000 bb's. No more mag changes... Hoo Ahh!
I find that a few items on this AEG are a bit loose like the selector arm and the reciever stamped cover spring is not too strong. Nothing however rattles shakes. Having real AK's I know that these are much tighter and some can be a real bitc# to get off. Also, the finish looks nice but still it's not 100% correct for an AK.
Pros
I tested this AEG before I bought it at Armed Forces and was immediately impressed by power of this AK model. I'm actually planning to keep this as a stock power AEG and am worried in it's stock form may still be to powerful for use at some game sites here in HK. (I will have to do the old Hop-up trick to get past the marshals)
As far as looks go, this is the most realistic model AK I have seen. Most will never notice the finish is slighty off. All the proper markings, has a bayonet lug, realistic sight markings, all metal and wood except for the plum colored pistol grip. The sight mount is solid and can be used to hold a real steel scope mount. Even the cleaning rod is the correct length (However, I don't suggest you use this on your AEG)
This seems very minor but the instruction book is in chinese and (proper) English. There are loads of drawings and details on maintaining and removing the parts.
Ratings
Price: 3 / 5 Worth it to me but maybe an expensive purchase for most
Durability: 5 / 5 Very solid exterior. I will look at the gear box some time in the future[i/]
Realism: 5 / 5 Best on the market for detail, fit and finish
Gear Box: Can't rate it yet but from what I have read elsewhere I think it will hold high marks
Overall: 4 / 5. One point off for price. Besides that I think this will be the game gun of my dreams. This will not be just closet queen but a true game gun...
