WEATHERING TRICK: The weathering is really just painting. I sanded down the raised portions of the aeg to bare metal then applied a clear gloss coat. (Do not sand the gas tube as this is made from copper)
After the clear coat dried I applied Testors's Buffable Gun metal color spray paint from a spray can in 3 very light coats.
Once the paint is dry (30 minutes) I buffed the high lighted raised areas again so the clear coated metal metal high lights are exposed but not through the clear coat. Your Metal parts are now done.
For the pistol grip I applied Tamiya Red brown acylic model paint with a brush and once dry masked the grip area and applied another coat of clear over the red brown. Once the clear coat was dry I used black shoe polish (the type you get in the bottle with a sponge head) and let this semi dry then wiped off the wet stuff.
On the real wood stock I dinged it up with some tools creating scratches and dings then also used the same shoe polish letting some of the polish rest in the recesses of the added marks. Let it all dry. Finally add a kar98 sling and... Ta Da! Done Herr Peter. Give it a try. If you mess up you can always repaint it black again.
HOP-UP & INNER BARREL REMOVAL Under where the fore most receiver screw was located and in the same hole is an allen set screw which hold the other barrel in place. Remove this and slide the outer barrel forward. Now you can remove the inner barrel with the hop-up.
Great review Kalbs! thanks. nice weathering on the metal and on the wood portions. will you use that in on of our games? I'd like to borrow that some time
Oh ya... it is a player. You can borrow it any time bro
ADDED 22 March:
I used the MP44 for the first time in a game today. Excellent range and accuracy is not too bad using .25's. It had no problems doing battle against AK's and M4's. All kills were at long and medium range. I had no problems with the weight, balance seems accepable. However, the banana Mag is quite long so using it in a prone position is difficult. Overall I am very happy with the MP44 as a game gun. It is not a wall hanger, the MP44 will for sure see battle again.
UPDATE: Second game gave me atlest 6 kills at good range. It has become a feared AEG on the field of play. Although I carry two AGM spare mags, I find a single high cap is enough. I still want to replace the inner barrel with a tighter bore and will write about that replacement soon with a chrono test.
Got mine yesterday, must be a newer model, neoprene in the battery compartment, no battery wobble, stock pull pin with spring end, 385 +/-4 fps with 0.25, clear plastic hopup, took her to a game and she shoots straight, fast and acurate like a demon, came in plain brown box, no markings on box or gun
