During the preview, you'll see some of the work that went into making the seven-part documentary about World War II. Excerpts are introduced by interview footage of the filmmakers or participants in the film. Series for sale at HMV for $929

So far I've seen 3 of the DVD's. The first DVD is 4 hours long... holy crap. The following DVD's are 2 hours each.
So far I have been impressed by the detail but keep in mind it focuses 50% on the home front. Some of the combat footage is amazing but it can be disturbing. They cover the Philippines in lots of detail. I didn't know St. Thomas University was an internmant camp for non-combatants, did you?
Basically the documentary covers 4 US cities and soildiers, airmen and sailors from them over the war period. Some examples of the Philippine area of interest is a soldier of the Bataan campaign and a woman who as a child is interned in Manila (St. Thomas).
If you watch this series be prepared to spend several days in front of the tube.

holy crap...4 hours! i saw the long previewand it was good, lots of footage there that ive never seen before. Ken Burns, we cant go wrong with that guy. In the imovie software from mac, there is a visual effect there that you can use for still photos that was named after him...its called the Ken Burns Effect. i use it and it works great.
Yep, Sto.Tomas University main building was used extensively by the US forces. Btw, me, the mrs, ronin and the general, we all graduated from that university. When i was there in that building, that place always gives me the creeps... knowing what had happened there and i have already saw a lot of photos of that place during ww2....it was both creepy and amazing for me since the walls of that bldg has seen a lot of history.

Santo Tomas during WW2 ....must be full of ghosts The one thing I notice about the WW2 photos and film is that there appears to lots of contrast between the B&W. Something to remember in photo shoots.

My mom lived in the middle of Manila, the Tondo area and she and her family lived through those fearful days of the Japanese occupation. I remember her stories about how my grandmother would scrap for food for the kids, my mom and 4 uncles.. I wouldn't want her to see these pics nor the DVD. It would just bring back painful memories for her.

Maybe it would be a reminder of inspiration, togetherness and family. You can never forget a painful memory because it becomes part of "you". It is however a good point and apparently why Ken Burns made the documentary and not specifically targeted for Lola. Too many of those of the younger generations didn't know the truth and too many only saw it in the movies which we know is all BS (remember the movie "Pearl Harbor"?). Ken Burns let's others tell the story, those who were there and lived it and backs it up with film and sounds of the era. Brilliant work.

Ronin, Yes please. Having someone that understands the look, photoshop and the history makes the perfect photographer. Some Ideas: 1. Rent a fishing boat and do a Vietnam "Brown Water Navy" or SEALs shoot 2. WW2 Bougainville photo shoot (Camo HBTs)...I really want to use my BAR 3. Korean war-Inchon or Mountain shots
